Wedtern Uganda – Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital authorities are concerned by increased in the number of epileptic patients who they say have increased within a space of one year.
According to Dr. Gerald Wakweyika, an expert running an Electro Encephalo Gram (EEG) says epilepsy disease has worried neurological doctors at the facility.
Electro Encephalo Gram is a special machine which was donated by the University of Duke in United Kingdom way back 2019 specialized in testing epileptic patients.
And Epilepsy is neurological condition which affects the electrical impulses in the brain.
Wakweyika says epilepsy is also a biblical historical disease associated with Jesus’ miracle teachings.
Causes of epilepsy range from prenatal (during pregnancy, fetal distress, birth and growth) to behavior wise especially on people who use narcotic substances such as smoking marijuana, alcoholism, and cannabis.
Wakweyika also says that epilepsy is sometimes caused by accidents, infections like syphilis and AIDS.
“Anybody at any stage can stand a risk of developing epilepsy” said Wakweyika
He says the brain attack disease taken unserious by locals has taken a twist and is at its peak in western region.
Francis Byamukama, a resident of Kirembe cell, Nyamityobora ward in Mbarara municipality mistook the disease that attacked his son Owen Ainebyoona to be a demonic misfortune that came as a result of satanic powers.
“My son Owen got this disease at the age of eight and would fall down without understanding what exactly happened. But being a born again I went to many churches we prayed but nothing change until we recently came to the referral hospital that he tested epilepsy which was unheard throughout my life ministry” says Byamukama
He confirmed that after receiving medication a boy who dropped out of school in 2010 is now improving.
“I knew nothing about epilepsy and first thought they were demons attacking my child but after giving him medicine there is now an improvement on his health” Byamukama noted
Speaking to Owen Ainebyoona (the patient) aged 20yrs who is improving healthy wise is hopeful of rejoining school to study and become a mechanic.
“I could not feel any pain but I would only get shock and fall down. But God being on my side I am now recovering, I no longer fall down and when I complete my studies I will become a mechanic” Ainebyoona explained
He was by then in P.3 and Ainebyoona was such a bright child but later developed epilepsy and stopped studying says Byamukama
Another, Aloysius Kunanuka aged 23 a resident of Rwengwe cell, Kichenche Sub County in Ibanda district, says he doesn’t know how he falls when attacked by the epilepsy condition.
“I don’t know how it happens like the way I am seeing you hear I can find myself going slowly until I fall down and that happens once in a while” said Kunanuka
He says the disease stopped him from grazing cattle as his parents feared him to get drown in water.
Kunanuka’s mother Mrs. Evelyn Katema confirmed that his son was born okay and started schooling like any other child until in P.3 when he suffered from the reported disease.
“I thought of it being a satanic demon and we went to churches in Kampala even to witch doctors but the disease has persisted” said Katema
Among 5 children Katema says, Onesmus is the forth born only suffering from epilepsy.
She described Kunanuka as an extra ordinary person who could do a number of activities to become a bread winner for the family.
“After developing epilepsy I realized that I lost a very important person in a family. When Onesmus is okay, he is a knowledgeable person who can do electric wiring better than experts, he is good at making money and in our family whoever wants to lend money has to go to Onesmus” explained Katema
Mrs. Katema says she has almost spent 2million shillings taking Kunanuka to a number of churches and visiting witchdoctors to recover his life.
“I have spent almost three to four million shillings on him because whoever would promise to treat him, we would sell part of our land at home to recover his life” charged Katema
Mbarara being a referral hospital, Dr. Wakweyika says they receive epilepsy patients as far as Kanungu and Kasese district.
“We have a good number in our population that is having this condition. We are getting people from Kanungu Isingiro and as far as Kasese” he says
However, Dr. Wakweyika confirmed that a big number of patients come from Isingiro, Mbarara and Sheema districts.
“On average we receive 20 patients in our clinic. People come around the municipality but we also have a good number from Isingiro, Sheema and Mbarara”
“There are good numbers there but of course others fear coming for treatment because of stigma” added Wakweyika
He encouraged epilepsy patients to go for medical treatment at zero cost in government facilities.
“If you have any person who is presenting with caesuras or is behaving in any way you are not understanding please seek medical advice wherever you are”
“All public hospitals in Uganda epilepsy services are for free. There is no consultation fee you walk in walk out without any cost” says Wakweyika
He however, confirmed a few epilepsy patients get full treated after medication.
“There is a small percentage where epilepsy patients can get cured for good but a big number stay on medication to prevent them from facing symptoms. And this doesn’t know age, rich or poor every person can suffer from epilepsy and end result is death if you don’t go for treatment” Wakweyika explains
He challenged the government on the general issue of understaffing in hospitals and lack of utilities like running out of drugs in hospitals.
“It is a worry and being few on ground lobbying for more people on board such that the team is bigger to run a specialized system to deliver a basic epilepsy treatment clinic for patients. Like now you’ve seen patients are many but doctors are few” said Wakweyika. By https://twitter.com/AaronAinomugis3
Banana farmers in Rwampara district and western Uganda as a whole have expressed worry over a strange banana disease outbreak in their area that has threatened food security and income.
Believing that it is not Banana Xanthomonas Wilt, or banana bacterial wilt or enset wilt, farmers say a banana changes its color before drying and the affected banana can neither be cooked nor sold.
Some of the residents led by the Chairman LC 2 Kigaaga parish in Mwizi Sub County Mr Turyaheebwa Francis explained that the outbreak has already affected their income especially in this period of 1st academic term 2020 when school fees is a task, loans still a burden to many, and food in their homes.
‘Even when you have money to buy meat, you can’t get a good bunch of matooke to cook,’ a woman said.
This disease has also been reported in districts like Ntungamo, and was reported in Isingiro about two months ago.
According to Mwesigwa Kyomukama Jotham a politician and farmer in Mwizi, this exposes how incompetent some government workers are because extension workers and agricultural officers should have intervened by now.
Rwampara people considerably contribute to the banana market in western Uganda urban centres like Mbarara, plus Uganda’s capital Kampala and other urban centres supplied by banana producing districts including Isingiro,Bushenyi and others.
Authorities have not yet started sensitization on this issue yet they have been notified of this disaster.

Mbarara being the centre of southwestern Uganda,it is occupied by people from various districts and countries like Rwanda,Tanzania,Burundi, and others, making a population of about 220,000 people.
Set to be a city effective July 1, 2020, Mbarara is facing a challenge of over 100 street kids (as estimated by 2018); many of them desert from their village areas with no positive intention, some escaping domestic violence and other mistreatment cases.

Meanwhile, Mbarara is not the only urban centre facing street Kids, it is followed by Kasese in the border of Uganda and D R Congo, and on several occasions, street kids have been arrested for crimes especially theft.
